Behaviour Support

Behaviour Support

Helping people across the Blue Mountains, Nepean, Lithgow and Western Sydney build safer, calmer and more positive lives.

What is Behaviour Support?

Positive behaviour support is an evidence-based approach that focuses on the understanding the reasons behind behaviours requiring support and developing strategies that improve quality of life.

At Able2 we create practical, positive Behaviour Support Plans that work in everyday life.

How we can help

Understand what’s behind behaviours and what the person needs.

Create practical strategies that make everyday life safer and calmer.

Help families, carers and support teams feel confident providing consistent support.

Build communication skills, confidence and stronger relationships.

Why Able2 feels different

Many Behaviour Support Plans are filled with clinical language, lengthy reports and complicated strategies that rarely make it into everyday life.

We believe Behaviour Support should be practical.
It should make life easier—not more complicated.

Better plans create better outcomes

Our Behaviour Support Plans are written for the people supporting the participant everyday.

Parents.

Support workers.

Teachers.

Carers.

We take time to understand what matters to the participant, their family and the people around them, creating strategies that genuinely fit everyday life.

Special interest: Neurodiversity and education

Charnee brings a unique perspective to the Able2 Behaviour Support team through her background in education.

Having worked as a teacher, she understands the realities of busy classrooms, the challenges educators face and the importance of creating strategies that genuinely work in school environments.

Her expertise helps bridge the gap between clinical recommendations and everyday practice.

Charnee also delivers training for Able2 staff, schools, parents, carers and community organisations, helping build greater understanding of neurodiversity, sensory differences and autism-affirming practice throughout our community.

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners develop through Able2’s internal trainee program, with ongoing mentorship, supervision and professional development from an experienced leadership team.

Strong clinical governance, ethical practice and continuous learning ensure every Behaviour Support Plan is evidence-informed, reflects current best practice and aligns with NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements, with a focus on improving quality of life and reducing restrictive practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is the recommended framework for providing long term support to people who have, or may be at risk of developing, behaviours that put themselves or others at risk.

It applies person-centred values and behavioural science and uses evidence to inform decision-making. PBS is not Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), and ABA is not used within our practice.

PBS approaches are based on a set of overarching principles that commit to providing support that promotes inclusion, choice, participation and equity of opportunity.

Behaviour support concentrates on proactive strategies implemented by a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner to prevent unsafe or harmful behaviours, minimise the use of Restrictive Practices, and promote inclusivity of the participant. This begins with getting to know the person, their strengths, preferences, environment, and what matters to them, while exploring what their behaviour may be communicating.

This involves gathering information through conversations, observation, and assessment to understand triggers, setting events, and the function of the behaviour. From there, the practitioner will develop strategies to improve quality of life, build skills, and make meaningful changes to the environment to reduce the need for behaviours requiring support. These strategies are written in the participant’s Behaviour Support Plan (BSP), a comprehensive document designed for everyone in their support network to provide a safe, consistent and neuro-affirming approach to reaching their goals.

Behaviour Support is designed to help people with disability, including those with mental health conditions, who are using behaviours requiring support (otherwise known as ‘Behaviours of Concern’). These behaviours may be posing a risk of harm to others, to the person themselves, or be otherwise reducing their quality of life. Behaviour Support can help people of any age, with any level of support need, in any type of accommodation; strategies will be tailored to the individual needs and circumstances of the participant. At Able2, our practitioners work with people from under three to over eighty years of age, who live with family, in supported living, with foster carers, in temporary accommodation, in medical settings, in retirement living, and more. Our diverse behaviour support team specialise in a wide range of areas including autism, brain injury, genetic disorders, psychosocial disability, neurological conditions, spinal cord injury, intellectual disability, speech impairment and dementia.

Able2 can provide in-person behaviour support services to the upper and lower Blue Mountains, Western Sydney and Lithgow area. Telehealth services may also be available for regional and remote areas such as the Hawkesbury, Central West and Southern Highlands.
