How did Able2 get here?
Able2 began its journey as part of a youth service called Mountains Youth Services Team (MYST), and our focus was to support young people with a disability. When MYST discontinued the disability program, Sue and Rod decided to take the whole disability team and create a new NDIS provider called Able2 in order to maintain and continue services to its clients. Our vision was, and is, to provide a local service providing exceptional, dynamic and creative supports for those in our community.
Able2 started on 4 January 2019 with a staff of 9 committed, brave and courageous people, all prepared to take the risk of starting a brand-new service together. Our service would focus on youth, but be open to all people with disability. We initially worked from our homes with Sue and Rod’s diningroom table becoming a busy and noisy desk space for us all.
An opportunity came up to use a small office space in Springwood behind a beautiful vegan cafe called One2One in May 2019. Able2 had grown in size and the team were not able to gather around a dining room table any longer, so we grabbed this wonderful opportunity and found ourselves in our first Able2 office. This period of time was so busy and incredibly exciting as we tried out and built new, innovative programs and support offerings. We also experienced the unusual event of our office roof blowing off! That was super exciting… but perhaps not in the right way! Our teams developed and grew, and our staff numbers doubled and trebled. The little office behind One2One was exploding with desks, staff, clients, dogs and noise! The delicious food and coffees that found their way from One2One into our office meant that not only was Able2 growing in size but so were we!
As we came out of the first covid lockdown in 2020, we moved into a bigger, brighter office in Raymond Road, Springwood. Through 2020 and 2021, we have learnt so much about how to keep a warm, nurturing feel in how we support our staff and provide our supports to clients despite all the challenges of COVID. We have learnt how to work with the NDIS systems, regulations and requirements. We have learnt to adapt to a pandemic and keep all our clients supported through it. We have learnt to run what has become a large organisation with complex systems and a variety of support areas. We have built and grown the skills and capacity of our staff and constantly focusing on the quality and ethics of our programs. It has been an incredible, privileged and worthwhile journey.
Sue & Rod wanted to build an organisation where staff were heard and respected, and where their family responsibilities could be flexibly managed around their work, where they could have every opportunity, and be supported, to reach their potential. They wanted a service where people with a disability felt comfortable, safe and welcome, where they could pop in and know where the kettle was to make a cup of tea for themselves before a session. Now, over three years later Sue & Rod manage a service that is known and respected for best practice and exceptional service.
Today, 65 committed, brave and courageous people working at Able2 strive to fulfil that that vision every day!
